Questions
Short answers about how this works and what it does not do.
Does puzzle generation happen online or on my computer?
On your computer. The puzzle engines and the PDF writer are JavaScript that runs in your browser. Once the page has loaded, generating a book needs no network connection, and your settings, word lists and puzzles are not sent anywhere.
Do I need an account?
No. There are no accounts, no sign-in and no email required. Open the builder and start.
Can I publish the PDFs commercially?
Yes. The layouts and puzzles this software generates are yours to publish and sell, including on KDP. Two things are outside our control and remain your responsibility: any words or content you supply yourself, and the rules of whatever platform or printer you publish through.
Can I use custom word lists?
Yes. Paste words in, or import a TXT, CSV or JSON file. Lists can be saved and reused, and they are stored on your device only. There are also 32 built-in themes.
How are Sudoku puzzles validated?
Each puzzle is solved from scratch by a solver written separately from the generator, using constraint propagation with backtracking. The puzzle is only accepted if that search finds exactly one solution. We also re-check that every clue matches the stored solution and that no row, column or box repeats a digit.
Are maze solutions included?
Yes. Every maze is solved independently, and the path is drawn on the matching solution page. Mazes are perfect mazes, so there is exactly one route between any two points.
Can I create mixed puzzle books?
Yes. Add as many sections as you like, in any order and any mix of the four types, and they print in the order you arrange them. One combined solutions section is appended at the back.
Can I still use it for classroom or non-KDP printing?
Yes. The KDP settings are defaults, not a cage: choose standard, wide or fully custom margins and turn off the blank page padding if you are printing at home or through another service.
Can I regenerate the same book?
Yes. Keep the seed and the settings and you get exactly the same puzzles again. Save a project file to keep both together; it stores your configuration, not the generated puzzles, because the seed rebuilds them.
Is this made for Amazon KDP?
Yes. KDP paperback interiors are what it is built for. Books are written at exact KDP trim sizes, the inside margin follows KDP's page-count table and widens as your book grows, a blank leaf keeps the page count even, fonts are embedded, and no bleed or crop marks are added. Before you download, the builder runs those rules against your finished book and shows what passes.
So is my book certain to be published?
No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. We check the requirements KDP publishes for interiors without bleed, which covers the common causes of rejection. An inside margin too narrow for the page count is reportedly the biggest one. But KDP sets its own rules, changes them, and makes its own decisions. Always review your file in their previewer before you publish. We are not affiliated with Amazon.
Which KDP trim sizes are supported?
5 × 8, 5.5 × 8.5, 6 × 9, 7 × 10, 8 × 10, 8.5 × 8.5 and 8.5 × 11 inches. 6 × 9 is the usual choice for puzzle books; 8.5 × 11 suits large-print and activity books. Page sizes are computed in exact PDF points, because a size that does not match the trim you select in KDP is rejected automatically.
What about the cover, and the page count for the spine?
Covers are not included in this version, which produces the interior only. The export tells you the exact final page count, which is the number you need for spine width when you build your cover.
Are my books unique?
Each new book starts from a fresh random seed, so in practice two people are very unlikely to produce the same book. We do not claim mathematical uniqueness: identical settings with the same seed produce identical puzzles, which is exactly what the seed is for.
How large can a book be?
Sections go up to 240 puzzles each and you can add several. Browser memory is finite, so very large books take longer and are harder work for phones and tablets; the builder warns you before starting one.
Is there a cover designer?
Not in this version. PuzzlePress produces the interior manuscript only.
